A couple of weeks back, I posted an article about some of my favorite new jazz artists coming around these days. In it, I briefly mentioned that the Squirrel Nut Zippers were one of my favorite jazz (loosely coined) bands to come out in the past handful of years. Unfortunately, the band has been largely inactive for the better part of the last decade, not counting a brief tour and live album a couple of years back. Really, it’s a shame because in my opinion, they were one of the most exciting and unique musical voices to emerge in the last 20 years. Then, much to my surprise, the band updated their official Facebook page with this banner earlier today:
I saw the date and nearly fell outta my damn chair! I couldn’t believe that the band was gonna play a show! Granted, the show is in Bogota, Columbia, but nonetheless, it’s a show. I decided to write to Jimbo Mathus, the singer for SNZ on his Facebook page to ask what the story was. (side note: Members of the SNZ have been putting out their own records for some time. Jimbo Mathus has released some amazing albums. His new album White Buffalo is coming out on January 22nd and it’s sure to kick some serious ass! Do yourself a favor and check it out here) Here was his response:
Judging by his response, I suppose fans of the band are just gonna have to hope that the SNZ land somewhere nearby. Honestly, if I had the cash, I would totally fly down to Bogota just to see ’em finally. I guess I can take solace in the fact that at least they are playing together again! Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to see them live someday, cause honestly, bands as good as the Squirrel Nut Zippers don’t come along too often.
