Here we are at the end of the 2012! How exciting is that? The Mayan calender bullshit didn’t kill us all! Go humans!
This is obviously also the last Shuffle Sunday column for the year too! On that note, I’d like to say thank you to everyone that has read anything that I’ve put out there in the last few months. I officially passed 5,000 views in just three months the other day! Again, I really am not sure if that’s a big deal or not, but it’s nice to know that it’s being read.
I’m working on some fun stuff coming up in the New Year (website, contests, giveaways, new columns, guest writers etc.) but until then, how bout we sit down and enjoy 5 tracks of who knows what from that big ol’ library of mine. And as always, thank you for reading.
Marilyn Manson “Get Your Gunn (live)”
I loved this song and album when I was younger. I guess there is still a big part of me that really does dig Marilyn Manson, but there is a big part of me that is just kind of over it. The last few albums that they’ve released are really kind of boring and generic. I feel like the focus was lost somewhere along the way (I’m sure it doesn’t have anything to do with Manson being a drunk cokehead) and that’s really a shame seeing as his first four records or so were absolutely impeccable. Same thing happened for this band live. They used to put on shows that were full of theatrics and cool shit, now they just look like 4 old goth dudes living in the past. At least I’ve still got this album to remember when it was really god damn good.
Jay-Z “Oh My God”
This is probably the best way to kick off a coming out of retirement album! Jay’s lyrics on this song aren’t anything special, and neither is his delivery. In fact, I feel like Jay’s performance on this record is pretty average at best. What is awesome is the production from Just Blaze. If it wasn’t for his music on this track, I don’t think it would be anywhere as strong of a song. Seriously, the music on this track is fucking amazing. It makes me feel like a badass, like I can do anything! Given the shitty vocal performance on this track, it did the same thing for Jay-Z.
Schwein “My Sanctuary”
What a cool track this is! If you’re not familiar with this band, it’s probably because they really didn’t exist outside of Japan. Schwein is comprised of Raymond (PIG), Sascha (KMFDM) and two Japanese dudes from a band called Buck Tick. I guess it was an industrial supergroup of sorts. This track is a remake of a PIG song most commonly found on the Praise The Lard record. If you’ve ever listen to either KMFDM or PIG and have enjoyed either of them, you will dig this track too. Really, this band just sounds like either of them, but with some Japanese action happening too. (side note: this is the most expensive CD I’ve ever purchased. I got it imported from Japan back when it came out (2001) and it cost me 85 bucks after shipping! Also, there is a song on this record called “Lard, Lips, Liquor” and it’s awesome to hear the Japanese fellas try to pronounce the “L’s”. It totally doesn’t work!)
Aqualung “Easier To Lie”
I can definitely recognize the talent it takes to create a song like this, but it doesn’t sound unique or special at all. He should have titled this record Predictable and Boring, cause I can’t imagine the rest of this album takes any risks. It sounds like there could be a hundred other bands that did this track. Is it The Fray? Is it David Gray? Is it a shitty U2 b-side? See…..when you think about it like that, it kind of takes away any special qualities that the song could hold. And again, that’s not saying it’s a bad song, it’s just very boring and generic. Although, I’m sure this guy has sold more records than any of the bands that I really love, so maybe he’s on to something. Or maybe people are just stupid. Who knows.
The Beatles “Day Tripper”
Motherfucker! Seriously, these fucking guys have snuck into Shuffle Sunday like 3 times already! I think there must be some sort of conspiracy between The Beatles and Itunes. I’ll bet those assholes are in cahoots with each other to make sure they get played all the god damned time. Somewhere, some computer dork is writing an algorithm built specifically to fuck up my Sunday! What’s different between this song and the other turds I’ve covered by both McCartney and The Beatles in SS is that I actually really like this song. This is actually one of my favorite Beatles songs, so I’m not really sure why I’m that upset. I’m not really sure at all actually……..right. I’ll shut up now and just enjoy this song.
WINNER OF THE WEEK: I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but……The Beatles. That song is just too fucking cool.
TURKEY OF THE WEEK: It feels like picking on a dog without a leg, but it’s gotta be that Aqualung track. Too plain for my liking.
What was your winner of the week? How bout Turkey? Let me know in the comments section below or on Facebook and Twitter.
