Shuffle Sunday Blizzard Edition (2/24/13)

Today I decided to do a special edition of Shuffle Sunday. When I sat down this morning to write S.S., some really strange shit started to pop up. Pretty much every song was an upbeat track or had something to do with sun. Well….that just didn’t seem appropriate because here in Denver, we are (finally) getting some snow! So I decided to do away with all of the summertime music that I was getting (Israel Vibration, Jack Johnson……Sheryl Crow wtf?) and give you 5 tracks inspired by the snow. Hope you enjoy!

Ascension of the Watchers “Like Falling Snow”

Ascension Of The Watchers is Burton C. Bell from Fear Factory along with John Bechdel (who, as far as I can tell, has been in almost every band. ever.) When this project was announced, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I’m so used to hearing Burton tear shit up that I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a low key record. But in all honesty, this entire album is pretty incredible. Fittingly, this track is a perfect track for the weather outside today.

Atmosphere “Nothing But Sunshine”

I’ve already talked about how much I appreciate about Atmosphere in an earlier post, so I’m not gonna go around kissing ass again. Go ahead and give this track a listen though. This shit just sounds cold. Such awesome writing and beats. Everything about this track reminds me of winter.

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross “Hidden In Snow”

C’mon. The title kind of tells you everything you need to know with this track. Again, I have a long history of kissing Trent’s ass, so I’m not gonna do it again (much) here. If you aren’t familiar with Reznor and Ross’ soundtrack work, this is a great place to start. Admittedly, I do kind of miss the ferocity of Nine Inch Nails, but when songs like this are released, it’s hard not to appreciate it. Besides, his soundtracks win Grammys! They don’t just hand those out to anyone……..ummmm…..nevermind.

Fawn “Ice Like Mine”

A lot of you may not be familiar with this band. This is one of the many different projects of Jason Novak (Acumen Nation, Czar, DJ? Acucrack etc.) I always really liked this project. It’s one of those rare albums that creates moods instead of enhancing them. I suppose this record would be considered “shoegazer,” but I’ve always really hated that term. It just sounds fucking stupid. So instead, I’m just going to call it awesome and encourage you to check it out. It’s the perfect companion for a snowy day.

Type O Negative “White Slavery”

Ok, so I guess the inclusion of this song is kind of a stretch. It’s about coke addiction. Which I suppose is kind of like snow??? Anyways. Type O is a perfect winter band. Slow and dirgey with flourishes of organ. It’s like the perfect winter music. Don’t believe me? Try to listen to this song on a bright sunny day in the middle of July. It’s just not the same. Unfortunately, the groups bassist and singer Peter Steele passed away a few years back, so we wont be getting anymore masterpieces like this record. It’s always a nice record to hear it during a snow storm and look back in fond remembrance though. R.I.P. Pete.

There is no Winner or Turkey of the week because, well, I like all these songs!

What are some of your favorite winter songs? Do you like some music more during different seasons? Let me know in the comments section or on Facebook and Twitter.

I am absolutely and unabashedly in love with music. If I could eat a huge bowl of songs for breakfast every morning, I totally would. I'm obsessive about categorization (don't mess with my chronological or alphabetical) and can't stand an unorganized iTunes library. Outside of music and writing, I love baseball (go Rockies), coffee, corgi's and going on fun trips with my girlfriend!
