When you load up your Itunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..
Sonic Youth “Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)”
I’ve always thought that Sonic Youth is one of the more overlooked bands of their era. Nearly every album they released was at least good if not more. Perhaps one reason they were never able to break out is because of the diversity represented in their music. Are they punk? Are they indie rock? Are they heavy? Really, you never knew from album to album, song to song, which makes Sonic Youth even fucking cooler. On top of that, their largest amount of exposure came next to Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc. To be fair, very few bands could survive that, but Sonic Youth did.
Ozzy Osbourne “The Ultimate Sin”
Some songs age well, while others do not and “Ultimate Sin” definitely falls into the latter category. Now I’ve never been the biggest Ozzy fan (aside from a handful of songs) but this song just sounds awful. The drums sound absolutely fucking awful in this track. These honestly could be right up there with the St. Anger drums sounding like shit. That snare is tissue paper thin and the cymbal crashes are barely audible. The guitar and bass isn’t much better either. Both of them sound like they are running through a little practice amp. Really the only thing in the entire mix that sounds good is Ozzy. Probably cause he was bringing the drugs. Never piss off your boss if they give you drugs right?
Pigface & DJ? Acucrack “First Taken Third Found”
This album was fucking awesome because it combined two of my favorite bands at the time, Pigface and DJ? Acucrack. I’ll be the first to admit that some of the remixes on this album weren’t my favorite, but overall it was better than the other handful of remix albums that Pigface put out that year. This album was released right when Pigface (Martin Atkins really) were releasing literally everything under the sun. Live recordings, remix albums, compilations, remastered reissues and the list goes on and on. Normally, I would be pumped about the volume of output, but with Pigface, it became too much. It was honestly a case of over saturation and I really lost interest for a few years. But out of it all, i got this album, and I love it.
A Northern Chorus “No Stations”
I’ve never heard of this band before now that I recall, but if this song is any indication of the how they usually sound, I’m gonna have to check them out further. I really like the buildup of sounds throughout the song. The percussion changes tones at least 3 times! Tracks like this are really easy to dismiss at first, but when it explodes with sound halfway through, it becomes indispensable. The attention to detail throughout the track is great and even though it’s not necessarily my cup of tea, I appreciate it. More bands should put this much effort into their songs. The world would be a better place if they did.
Ramones “Rockaway Beach”
Now that The Ramones have been defunct for a while, it’s amazing to go back and listen to their songs and hear how much they challenged what punk rock was, and how much they’ve influenced current music. I was never the biggest Ramones fan. In fact, I remember the first time I ever saw them was on a late night show performing when I was probably 10 or so. I remember wondering how something so cool came out of a bunch of guys that looked so scary. Joey Ramone scared the shit out of me! But looking back, it’s amazing to see how The Ramones toed the line between punk and pop. Not only did they do it seamlessly on record, but (from what I know) they never really lost any credibility with the punk rock crowd either.
WINNER OF THE WEEK: I liked most of the songs this week, but the DJ? Acucrack/Pigface remix is just too awesome not to win!
TURKEY OF THE WEEK: That Ozzy song sounds waaaaay to shitty not to give it the thumbs down.
