Shuffle Sunday (5/19/13)

When you load up your Itunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..

Celldweller “The Last Firstborn”

This is hands down one of the top five best sounding albums I’ve ever heard. Celldweller ranges from heavy guitar to heavy synths and doesn’t miss a beat the entire time. I dig most of the songs on this record too, so that certainly doesn’t hurt. It was just announced that they are doing a 10th anniversary reissue for this album. I can’t imagine what they could possible do to this record to make it sound any better in terms of remastering, but I suppose I’ll find out. If you’ve never heard this guy, really take the time to check it out.

Soundgarden “Little Joe”

Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands, but I really don’t give a shit about them. Make sense? I’m not too sure it does for me either. I always get excited when they put out new music (and usually like it) and I’ve always wanted to see em live, but whenever they come around, I never go. It just never works out that I’m in a Soundgarden mood when they’re around. Listening to their early stuff is kind of funny. Chris sounds like he’s mocking Axl Rose in this track. I’m glad he discovered that his voice is fucking rad and developed more than what is heard here.

Brian Setzer “When The Bells Don’t Chime”

God damn I love me some Brian Setzer! Unlike a lot of other folks, I didn’t really give a shit about the Stray Cats, but when Brian dropped the Orchestra for a “solo” record in 2001 it was fucking incredible. The follow up (this album) was just as good. This is one of my favorites from that album. Not only does it have Brian’s awesome guitar playing, but he uses a banjo and does it the right way (I’m looking in your direction Mumford.) I always wanted to buy a big hollow body bastard of a Gretsch guitar and learn how to play like Brian, but I have tiny hands and fairly little patience when it comes to learning shit like that so I suppose I’ll just stick to dreaming about it.

KISS “Strutter”

What’s the appeal with KISS? I know a bunch of people that I enjoy like KISS, but I’ve never been able to get into them. It sounds like sleazy ass old man dork rock, but I suppose that’s a fairly accurate description. I’m pretty sure the public agrees with me on this one too. I can only think of a handful of songs that have done well. Other than that, it’s all about merchandise, grease paint and shitty songs. Although, if Nine Inch Nails had a coffin, I’d probably buy that, so who am I to talk shit…

The Nightwatchman “The Garden of Gethsemane”

It’s awesome that this is Tom Morello. I’ll bet he got tired of starting riots and making his guitar sound all fucking weird, so he decided to do this. I wonder what it’s like playing a song like this when you have the capability to do so much more? Not that I don’t really like this song, because I do. It just doesn’t sound like he’s living up to his potential. It sounds like a Bruce Springsteen outtake if Bruce was depressed and all fucked up on Percocets. Not a bad sound, just different.

WINNER OF THE WEEK: Tough decision this week, but I’m gonna go with the Celldweller song, mainly because that album sounds so good.

TURKEY OF THE WEEK: I don’t even need to tell you it’s KISS. I know some people love em, but I’m not one of those people. KISS really is lame.

What do you think? What is your favorite song of the week? Least favorite? Let me know in the comments section below, or find me on Facebook and Twitter.

I am absolutely and unabashedly in love with music. If I could eat a huge bowl of songs for breakfast every morning, I totally would. I'm obsessive about categorization (don't mess with my chronological or alphabetical) and can't stand an unorganized iTunes library. Outside of music and writing, I love baseball (go Rockies), coffee, corgi's and going on fun trips with my girlfriend!
