Shuffle Sunday (3-16-14)

When you load up your iTunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..

Danzig “Sacrifice”

As much as I want to get in to all Danzig related projects (Misfits, Samhain, solo) I’ve never been able to get excited about any of it. It never grabbed my attention like I felt like it should. However, there is some wiggle room when it comes to this album, Blackacidevil. It’s got some more industrial/electronic action and the songs seem to have more movement for lack of a better word. Maybe it’s just a stylistic preference, but this version of Danzig is great in my eyes, but if I were to guess, I would imagine that this album is the least favorite of any Danzig purist out there.

12 Rounds “Pleasant Smell”

Looks like it’s “under appreciated industrial album day” today. This album is great from begining to end. It features Atticus Ross, who anymore these days is Trent Reznor’s right hand man. He’s done all sorts of work on NIN albums and a ton of other groups. Also, he’s a member of Trent’s “other” band How To Destroy Angels. The lady singing is Claudia Sarne who is also Atticus’ wife. Although she hasn’t been as active as Atticus, she’s got one of my all-time favorite voices in music. This is a great record, I highly recommend it (if you can find it).

The Dandy Warhols “Love Is The New Feel Awful”

Whatever happened to these guys? Either they are broken up or they are out there and still releasing music and I just haven’t been paying attention. Either way, this band is rad. I don’t know how you would classify their music. There is just so much going on with it, especially a song like this. I imagine if there were rock bands on Mars, this is what they would sound like. It’s really fucking out there, but stays rooted with great lyrics and melody. And just listen to this outro….holy shit! I should really catch up with this band and see what (if anything) I’ve been missing. If you’re reading this, then you should probably do that too.

Papa Roach “…To Be Loved”

Well, it was only a matter of time before Shuffle Sunday shat out something awful. For anyone that’s been reading this for a while, you may remember that Papa Roach has the distinct honor of being my least favorite song of…well…ever. That being said, this song isn’t half as bad as that other song, but it still isn’t enjoyable. I had no idea that this was a Papa Roach song until today. I thought this was just a shitty song that was earmarked for action movie trailers or for bands that play county fairs to cover. It’s like bro-metal mixed with Motley Crue which all but guarantees that this is gonna grab no one’s attention. Fucking awful.

1000 Homo DJ’s “Supernaut”

Thankfully, my iTunes is a fairly well-trained beast and knows when I’m mad at it. It knew that it had better play a good song to cleanse my audio palate from the garbage that preceded this. 1000 Homo DJ’s was just one of the many bands started by Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker when they weren’t busy with Ministry and getting high. It amazes me how productive these dudes were back in the day. They had so many bands that it became hard to keep track of all of them. This band only released a couple of 12″ singles, but they were fucking great! If the guy singing sounds familiar, it’s because it’s Trent Reznor. Before he got all famous with NIN, he hung out with Al and made this recording and was also a touring member of the Revolting Cocks. Good times here.

WINNER OF THE WEEK: It’s actually a really tough decision this week, but I’ll go with the 12 Rounds track.

TURKEY OF THE WEEK: If you don’t know who it is, then you didn’t pay attention.

I am absolutely and unabashedly in love with music. If I could eat a huge bowl of songs for breakfast every morning, I totally would. I'm obsessive about categorization (don't mess with my chronological or alphabetical) and can't stand an unorganized iTunes library. Outside of music and writing, I love baseball (go Rockies), coffee, corgi's and going on fun trips with my girlfriend!
