When you load up your iTunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..
Amon Amarth “Where Is Your God?”
Nice start! I’ve never been a huge death metal fan, but I always get down when Amon Amarth comes on. You really can’t go wrong when you hear a song that’s talking about vikings or dragons or a fucking hammer. Really, when the subject matter is that solid, you know you’ve got a good song on your hands. It also doesn’t hurt that these guys are really…really great musicians. I may just need to put this album on heavy rotation this week.
Miracle Fortress “Have You Seen In Your Dreams”
So I haven’t got the slightest idea who this band is or how I managed to get my hands on it. It certainly wasn’t by my own accord. Listening through this song, and my first instinct is to say “fuck this song” (probably because I’m all hyped up on Amon Amarth), but really, it’s not that bad. It just kind of…is. It’s like a strange amalgamation of Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend and Coldplay all rolled into one. OK, on second thought, fuck this song.
Old Crow Medicine Show “Methamphetamine”
When I was in my late teens/early 20’s, I used to go to the bookstore every week and check out all of the music magazines. I would sit there for hours and read reviews of all of the new albums coming out. One particular review that really stuck with me was a review of Old Crow Medicine Show’s first album, O.C.M.S. I remember that the reviewer put an emphasis on their music, likening it to “punk-rock bluegrass” which was enough to get me to check em out and boy am I glad I did! That reviewer was spot on and Old Crow is one of my favorite bands of this genre.
Cut Copy “Need You Now”
This “new” dance music that has been coming out for the last handful of years never really piqued my interests. Sure, it’s kind of fun and catchy, but I certainly couldn’t sit down and listen to an entire album of this stuff. That being said, the chorus on this track is pretty fucking great. I love it how the snare drum slowly builds up over the duration of the track. Good stuff. Oh, and check out that album cover. That’s enough to make damn near anyone nervous!
Viva Voce “Alive With Pleasure”
Again, no idea who this band is. My iTunes is really pulling out some different stuff this week. However, unlike that song earlier that was about as pleasant as passing an extraordinarily sized turd, this one isn’t so bad. This song at least keeps you guessing and on your toes. When it starts all stoner rock style you think you’re gonna be rocking out the whole time, but the band pulls the carpet out from under your feet (in a good way). I’m gonna have to keep these guys in mind I think.
WINNER OF THE WEEK: Cut Copy was nearly the dark horse, but its gotta be Old Crow Medicine Show. That song was pretty great.
TURKEY OF THE WEEK: Miracle Fortress wrote a completely boring and uninspiring song that sounded like at least 3 other awful bands.
