Red Hot Chili Peppers “Skinny Sweaty Man”
Back in 1987 when this record came out, do you think the world had any idea what this band would become? Hell, do you think the band had any idea what they would become? From what I understand, they had a pretty decent following at the time, but it was far from the world-renowned act that we all know today. And with songs like this, why wouldn’t they have a fairly large following. This song kicks ass! I have no idea what it’s about (a man…a suit….drugs) but that’s what makes it so fun to rock out to. And really, it doesn’t matter what it’s about. What matters is that it’s 1:20 of breakneck fun that, unlike their more recent work, you don’t need to think about to enjoy.
Black Tape For A Blue Girl “All My Lovers”
I’ve always had some sort of special affinity for this band, but I’ve never understood what exactly they were doing. This track is a perfect example of that. Is it goth music? Gypsy? Middle Eastern? Does it even really matter? Probably not, but I’m neurotic like that. I dig the song itself. It’s pretty fucking hot. The lady singer talking about feeling her lover inside her….that’s awesome. What isn’t awesome is when the guy singer backs her up. I went from imagining a sexy hot goth chick to a lame-ass new age hippy dork talking about his soul-mate. Sexy music fantasy ruined.
Imperial Drag “Boy Or A Girl”
Holy shit! This song is like having a flashback to my early teens! I loved this song when I was younger. I haven’t heard it in years, but it’s still as good as I remember. What’s awesome about it is that it doesn’t sound dated at all. It sounds like it could’ve been released earlier this year, not nearly 20 years ago. Maybe they were just ahead of their time, or maybe I just like really crappy music, but I challenge you to listen to this song and not get pumped up (yes, tapping your foot does count). Go on and try it…….can’t be done.
Jane’s Addiction “Wrong Girl”
Jane’s Addiction is the perfect example of when a band is less than the sum of its parts. I’ve tried my ass off to really get into them, but just can’t. I dig the singles that they put out and a few other tracks peppered in, but overall, they just don’t hit it for me. I loved Porno For Pyros and Dave Navarro was great with the Chili Peppers and his solo work, but Jane’s could never live up to it’s reputation. This song is a standard fare Jane’s track, but the guitar solo is pretty fucking awesome. I guess that makes it more exciting than usual, but still leaves me with a lackluster and boring feeling.
Hatebreed “Empty Promises”
I’ve never been a big follower of these guys, but I’ve always appreciated what they do. From what I’ve read throughout the years, they are really invested in their music, fans and shows, so I’ve got nothing but respect for these guys. As far as the song is concerned? I dunno. It’s hardcore. Doesn’t really stand out for me, but it’s alright. I like the breakdown at the end of the song, but I wish that was only a bridge or something. Why are hardcore songs so god damn short all the time? Is it just the style or what? As soon as I start getting into the track, it’s over. That always bums me out.
WINNER OF THE WEEK: Imperial Drag. No one gave a shit about that band back then, and no one does now, but that track was awesome!
TURKEY OF THE WEEK: Hatebreed. It’s not that I don’t like the song, it’s just too short for me to get jazzed up about, that’s all.
