Shuffle Sunday (12/2/12)

When you load up your Itunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..

Good Charlotte “Misery”

Throughout my entire life, I’ve always felt that I’ve been running 5 years late on everything. With everything, music included. This song (and band for that matter) is a perfect example of just that. In my early 20’s, I really got into these guys. At that time, I really enjoyed this album and song. It seemed to fit exactly where I was at that point in my life (which in hindsight, is kinda depressing). Take one listen to this song and it sounds like it was written for a sad high school kid, not a bummed-out 22 year old man. Going back and listening to this song kind of provides me with some really nice self reflection. In hindsight, I was really fucking dramatic and my past interest in this song kinda proves that. Not that it’s a shitty song, it’s actually a fairly decent tune, but I can’t connect with it at all anymore. And that’s a really good thing.

Chiodos “Is It Progression If A Cannibal Uses A Fork?”

Oh ok Itunes, I see how it’s gonna be. I take a week off and you supply me with a steady diet of whiny ass bands. Thanks a lot. Dick. Chiodos is a band that I never listened to, let alone paid attention to. From the sound of this song, I’m glad I never did. This really sounds like a band that could kick some serious ass if they wanted to, but they just settled on being kind of boring. The coolest thing these guys have going for ’em is the rad album cover. Not into this at all.

Elbow “Some Riot”

There have been a couple of people that have really tried hard to get me into these guys. For whatever reason, I just keep blowing them off. Probably cause I’m kind of a dick when it comes to music (and I’m stuck in the late 90’s, but nevermind that). But honestly, after giving this song a couple spins, I’m gonna have to hear more. I get the feeling that this track may not be the best representation of the bands work, but it’s certainly enough to intrigue me to hear more of it. I really dig how the track slowly builds into a strong high point then slowly fades away. There’s a bunch of shit going on in the background here too. For having such minimal instrumentation, there sure are a lot of sounds going on. Listening to this song feels like putting together a puzzle. A really sad, indie rock puzzle.

The Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar”

Nice! It’s about time something came up that I really like! Now, I know I’ve said in the past that classic rock is something that I really never got into, and that’s true with the exception of the Rolling Stones. I’ve always felt that the Stones were some of the best songwriters of the last handful of decades. They make listening to music fun! Their songs always seem to be a perfect mix between highbrow snobbery and good old fashioned rock n roll. Their songs are always more interesting than the bullshit that AC/DC coughs up, but they sit in a groove and rock more than bands like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Most people might attribute that to Mick or Keith, but I think the real driving force behind the band their drummer, Charlie Watts. Dude is a beast behind the kit!

Baby Bash “Numero Uno”

I didn’t pay attention to the artist when this song came up on my shuffle. I just sat in a stupor, hypnotized by the ridiculous bullshit coming out of my speakers. Seriously, I didn’t move for like two minutes. My tongue got all dry and gross cause I couldn’t close my mouth. I honestly thought that some local band’s shitty mixtape made it onto my library. I know I’ve heard this dude’s name before, so I know that at least a few people are buying his records, but the real question is why??? It must be the line where Baby Bash talks about being into bacon. I could really connect with him on that….on second thought, I’ll bet it’s just a bunch of gross white trash with slopey foreheads buying this shit and bumping it in thier ’93 Chevy Lumina’s. This “song” is pretty fucking embarrassing, and I’ll bet the rest of the album is just as bad.

WINNER OF THE WEEK: Far and away, The Rolling Stones are my favorite pick this week. I mean c’mon, it’s a song about slagging dope…..or women…..or something. Whatever it’s about, it’s solid!

TURKEY OF THE WEEK: I was gonna go with Chiodos for this week (cause I hate that squealey guitar thing) until Baby Bash swooped outta nowhere and claimed the turd crown for himself.

I am absolutely and unabashedly in love with music. If I could eat a huge bowl of songs for breakfast every morning, I totally would. I'm obsessive about categorization (don't mess with my chronological or alphabetical) and can't stand an unorganized iTunes library. Outside of music and writing, I love baseball (go Rockies), coffee, corgi's and going on fun trips with my girlfriend!
