When you load up your Itunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..
Pulp “This Is Hardcore”
I’m honestly a little ashamed to admit that I’ve never really listened to Pulp. I’m especially regretful about that after listening to this fantastic track. What a fucking trip! This song sounds like it could’ve been a James Bond theme song or something. The strings and piano are all dramatic, especially leading up to the bridge where the song builds into a frenzied orgy of dramatics. Good times. This album came out in 1998 and I remember passing it by in the record store quite a bit. I always picked it up to check it out, but I’m sure at the time I was just trying to check out the girl on the album covers nipple. Who knew that this record would tease me again some 15 years later!?!
Bone Thugs N Harmony “Keep Grindin'”
I’ve always liked Bone Thugs, but what the hell is going on with this track? First off, it sounds like shit. It’s like the engineer for the album just said “fuck it” when he was balancing all of the levels. The treble is waaaay too high and the low end is pretty much non existent. Secondly, Bone used the melody from that awful song in the early 90’s (I think) where the chorus was “da da da da da da da.” That fucking song sucked back then, and now thanks to Bone, that god awful track is stuck in my head again. These guys are usually pretty spot on (or at least decent) but this track sucks.
B.B. King “We’re Gonna Make It”
I’ve always felt that B.B. King is just as much a miracle of modern science as much as he is a blues legend. Remember those commercials some years back where B.B. was talking about controlling his diabetes and getting his supplies on the cheap? Well, that was at least 10 years ago, but B.B. is still kicking it. Hell, he’s not only still kicking it, but he’s kicking ass along the way. B.B. still records albums and tours all of the time. Oh yeah, and he’s 88 years old. Let that sink in for a moment. 88 years old. Most people don’t even live that long, let alone productively. B.B. is the shit. Blues aren’t necessarily my cup of tea, but when I’m in the mood for them, I usually turn to B.B.
The Isley Brothers “Said Enough”
Talk about one of the more underrated groups of all time. The Isley Brothers (in my estimation) never really seem to get their dues. They’ve touched on so many genres throughout their career, from rock to soul to funk to r&b…these guys have seriously done it all. Also, their guitarist, Ernie Isley is criminally underrated for his chops. That dude can tear the shit up on a guitar, yet manages to make it sound sensual the entire time. I would love to see him and Prince square off on a guitar battle. Whoever is victorious would receive a years worth of virgins or something. Even though a lot of modern R&B sucks, I get the feeling it would be a whole lot worse if it wasn’t for The Isley Brothers.
AFI “The Face Beneath The Waves”
Wow. That’s pretty fast turnaround for something to be featured in Shuffle Sunday. This record came out a few days ago, so I haven’t really had the time to sit down and check it out. First impressions are mixed though, at best. I just can’t figure out what AFI is doing. Now, I’m not one of those people that says they “sold out” or that they need to go back to playing just punk rock. That attitude is just stupid. Artists grow and play the kind of music they want. That’s what makes music fun. It’s ever evolving. But with AFI, I can’t shake the feeling that they don’t even know what they want to play. There’s still slight shades of punk, but also electronics and some pretty morose goth rock stuff. Granted…I like all of that stuff, but it doesn’t seem like AFI can make a cohesive sound out of so many parts. I’ll check the album out more, but for now, I’m just a little confused.
WINNER OF THE WEEK: I’m really diggin that Pulp song and the music video is great to boot, so Pulp wins this week!
TURKEY OF THE WEEK: That Bone Thugs track really sucked. Honestly, not one redeeming thing could be found in that turd of a song.
