When you load up your iTunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..
Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros “Long Shadow”
Pretty decent start to Shuffle Sunday this week. I’m a huge fan of The Clash. In fact, I don’t think that band ever released an album that I didn’t at least mostly enjoy. Strummer’s solo work falls into the same category, but I don’t have nearly as much experience with it. Whenever it comes on, I’m always reminded how much I truly enjoy his work, but I’ve never managed to sit down and really ingest his solo work. That should probably change…especially if this song is any indication of the great stuff that awaits.
Ludovico Einaudi “Altri Pianeti”
My girlfriend introduced me to Einaudi a few years back. She always had a song of his playing on her computer and I fell in love with it. Subsequently, I sought out his previous works, thinking in the back of my mind that “surely, there’s got to be something disappointing in here.” But after listening through a majority of his albums, I’ve got to say that Einaudi is one of the finest composers of modern times. His work is cinematic, grand and full of emotion. It may not always be the flashiest presentation, but his music always warms my heart.
I’m pretty sure an Autechre song came up for Shuffle Sunday a couple of months ago. I’m also sure that I wrote then how I was never sure how to react to “IDM” (standing for Intelligent Dance Music…how up its own ass is that description?) music. On the one hand, if I’m in the right mood, I really enjoy music like this. But if I’m not in the right head space, this kind of stuff just sounds ridiculous. I always think to myself about all of the amazing songs bands like this could write if they just stopped being so….weird for a minute. I mean, the skill is obviously there, so why not create something epic?
Faith No More “Digging the Grave”
Wow. Here’s another band that I am always on the fence with. I’m sure that’ll make some of the FNM faithful lose their shit, but again, this band (and maybe more specifically Mike Patton) seem to skirt a little too close to the “experimental” line for my tastes. I’ve been fortunate enough to see three of Patton’s bands live throughout the years (Faith No More, Tomahawk and Mr. Bungle) and every time, the show is amazing. I mean it’s fucking mind-blowing! But when I get home to listen to the records, I just don’t feel the same way. I guess live energy just has a hard time transferring to tape.
Lil Wayne “3 Peat”
How did this guy get to be so goddamned big? Don’t get me wrong, he’s an alright MC. I mean, he always rattles off some pretty great punch lines and his delivery is (mostly) solid, but I still wouldn’t put this dude anywhere in my list of top ten MC’s currently. Especially considering his last few records. I Am Not A Human Being part 2 was an absolute shit show and the Rebirth thing was pretty awful too (but at least he took a risk with that one). I dunno, maybe I’m just getting old and jaded, but growing up with Biggie, Pac, Nas and Wu-Tang really spoiled a lot of new hip-hop for me.
WINNER OF THE WEEK: Far and away my favorite song this week was the Ludovico Einaudi song. That guy is amazing.
TURKEY OF THE WEEK: Hmmm. I didn’t “hate” any song this week, but the weakest was the Lil Wayne track.
