Shuffle Sunday (06/23/13)

When you load up your Itunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..

Extreme “Kid Ego”

80’s metal is definitely a hit or miss genre for me. Bands like Motley Crue and Def Leppard had some really great songs, but they also sucked a lot of the time. But out of the entire genre, this song by Extreme is probably one of my favorites. The opening guitar riff is just too fucking solid and the vocal melody throughout is great. This song always makes me want to recklessly drive a Delorean after doing a line off a huge set of fake tits….It’s a really good thing I was young in the 80’s. I’m fairly certain I would be dead otherwise.

Danzig “Going Down to Die”

Danzig has always been a pretty confounding figure to me. I’ve never particularly cared for the Misfits, and on top of that, I’ve never really much cared for his solo stuff either. It’s not that it’s especially bad, but it just feels so weak. What’s really strange though is that I really enjoy a lot of the musicians that Danzig has played with over the years. Prong and Type O Negative are two of my favorites, but I guess when you add Glenn in the mix, I just loose interest.

Bob Dylan “Nettie Moore”

OK. What’s the appeal with Bob Dylan? I understand that he’s one of the best lyricists of the last 40 years, but the same argument cannot be made for his presentation. Look, if Dylan was writing books, I’d probably love him, but out of the metric shit ton of albums that Dylan’s released, there are only a smattering of songs that I really enjoy. It’s just too abrasive for me. I have a good friend that used to feel the same way about Bob Dylan but he’s since changed his mind. He told me that it was a “Eureka!” moment for him and I hope to enjoy the same epiphany someday, but judging by the sound of this shit, it’s not going to be today.

Frou Frou “Psychobabble”

Man, I bet Imogen Heap is a fucking trip to hang out with. I imagine she would just be all sexy and breathy in everything that she said, even just everyday stuff. “ooooohhhhOOOOHHHH will you get the groceries?” “AAAAAAhhhhhaaa Wheel of Fortune’s on at 6.” How rad would that be? Can you imagine if her and Bjork met? It would just be a fucking full on crazy-sexy voice and synth battle! Who would be the winner……

Loreena McKennitt “Prologue”

Two things come to mind when I listen to Loreena McKennett. First off, she must speak to my Celtic roots, because every time I hear her music, I just want to rip my shirt off and go running through the Scottish Glenn. Secondly, I can’t help but think that Cirque Du Soleil probably owes her a fairly large debt of gratitude. Really, go to a Cirque show and listen to the music. It’s like the same damn thing. I wonder if she knows that? Hey Loreena, if you go after them for infringement, keep me in mind alright?

WINNER OF THE WEEK: God, it makes me feel so trashy, but I’m really digging on that Extreme song right now.

TURKEY OF THE WEEK: No epiphany today, Bob Dylan still sucks.

I am absolutely and unabashedly in love with music. If I could eat a huge bowl of songs for breakfast every morning, I totally would. I'm obsessive about categorization (don't mess with my chronological or alphabetical) and can't stand an unorganized iTunes library. Outside of music and writing, I love baseball (go Rockies), coffee, corgi's and going on fun trips with my girlfriend!
