Shuffle Sunday (04/21/13)

When you load up your Itunes and hit shuffle, what comes up? It could be good, it could be bad or anywhere in between. Shuffle Sunday is a look at what happens when I load up my library and hit play. Hopefully it will introduce you to a new artist you like, remind you of an old favorite or maybe just give you a good laugh! So without further ado, let’s see what Shuffle has in store this week…..

Stone Temple Pilots “Seven Caged Tigers”

There was a time when the Stone Temple Pilots were a really great band. Seriously. Few other bands could touch the shit they were doing on their first four albums. They were amazing. And then…..well, who really knows. Drugs were always there, so maybe it’s cause they got too clean? Not too sure, but I sure do miss the band that could write and perform songs as good as this one. I suppose if the band ever decides to work together again I would give em another shot, but they are on thin fuckin ice in my book.

GBH “Kangaroo Court”

GBH is awesome! They always felt like a punk rock band that metal heads could get down to. It’s like they forgot to pick up all of the pretension and highbrow bullshit when they formed a punk rock band. And that’s a really good thing cause these guys are solid. Really, just listen to this track. It’s pissed off about injustice and shit like punk rock, but it’s got some double bass and chugging riffs. GBH is the shit.

The Swell Season “The Moon”

When these guys came out a few years back, I absolutely hated them. The single from this record was so boring and uninspired and the video made me want to go outside, find a hipster and fuck him up with his own acoustic guitar. Really. I hated this shit. But….as you’ve heard me say in the past, I’m kind of a judgmental prick when it comes to first impressions. They really stick with me. This song here is actually pretty alright. I don’t know why they didn’t pick this song to be their single. This is ten times better than that other ironic scene baiting bullshit that they released (see what I mean! I can’t stop!)

Refused “Liberation Frequency”

Goddamn right! I got the chance to finally see these guys last year and they didn’t disappoint. Their energy never dropped for nearly two hours. Honestly, it was pretty incredible. Take one listen to this track and tell me that you don’t want to fight someone. Its just kinda what the Refused inspires. Glad to see they came back (even if only for a bit) and finally finished things out the right way.

Alec Empire “Ice (As If She Could Steal A Piece of My Glamour)”

Alec Empire always seems like he’s years ahead of anybody else. Atari Teenage Riot tore shit up back in the 90’s but I think it was definitely misunderstood by people. His solo shit is great though, especially his record Futurist and the Bass Terror. This album here doesn’t sound like any other Alec Empire work, but it’s just as awesome. This sounds like all that hip electronica bullshit that’s all the rage these days. Too bad Alec blows all of that garbage out of the water twice over!

WINNER OF THE WEEK: This is a tough decision. Any band could’ve won this week, but I’m gonna go with the Alec Empire track.

TURKEY OF THE WEEK: STP is gonna be it this week. Not cause this song is weak, but because of what they are now.

What do you think? What is your favorite song of the week? Least favorite? Let me know in the comments section below, or find me on Facebook and Twitter.

I am absolutely and unabashedly in love with music. If I could eat a huge bowl of songs for breakfast every morning, I totally would. I'm obsessive about categorization (don't mess with my chronological or alphabetical) and can't stand an unorganized iTunes library. Outside of music and writing, I love baseball (go Rockies), coffee, corgi's and going on fun trips with my girlfriend!
